Some friends and I tried to watch through the series on DVD last year, but gave up after about the second disc. Realizing how much it made us cringe now, but how much it felt JUST LIKE OUR LIVES back when it aired was just too painful. (Even I’m not that emo any more.)
I haven't watched it since 2002. Back then it stood the test of time, but we'll see now that I'm in my late 30s how it works. I was never that emo, I always thought the show was just very well-written (and interestingly structured in the way the adults and children's lives paralleled and referenced each other) and quite funny. It will be interesting to watch it again now that I've watched "Freaks and Geeks" the other perennial candidate for Best High School Television Show Ever.
Oh, one of my best friends from high school is visiting next week. I'll be she could tell some embarassing emo stories about me I'm still blocking out. :-).
The type of music a teenager who would identify with My So Called Life would listen too. :-). Have Chris play you some Death Cab for Cutie and Dashboard Confessional.

I think you should host a high-school-emo night. Invite people over to watch MSCL and tell their most embarassing high school story.
I didn't watch F&G until it came out on DVD -- so good though! And not nearly as painful to watch.
Have you ever seen Popular? Somewhere between the other two. Not as emo as the first, more biting than the second.
Er...a better description:

I guess I usually think of it in terms of the musical genre, but I use it to expand out into all things "missunderstood teenager".
("emo" -> "emotional")
