I’ve started serializing 1989 A Novel, which some of you may remember I posted excerpts from to Vox about a year ago. This novel, which I’ve been writing on and off for the past thirteen years, is set during the titular year in a seaside college town named Santa Zita, which bears a suspiciously close resemblance to Santa Cruz, CA, where I attended college. I’d love to be able to that it’s not a semi-autobiographical coming of age novel, but... that would be a lie.
The first scene of the novel, “The Worst Way to Wake Up” was posted on Sunday night and can be accessed via the following Universal Resource Locator:

As I promised two weeks ago, my plan is to post extracts from the novel scene by scene until it’s done. That will be easier during Part I, which is mostly written, but will get harder later this year.
