If one had to point to one moment that transformed U2 from a moderately successful member of the mid-80s "Celtic Invasion" (along with Simple Minds, Big Country and the Alarm) to international superstars, it might be this one--their performance of "Bad" at the Live Aid concert in summer 1985. Bono quotes every classic rock song he's heard in his life and then forces his bandmates to play the same groove for five minutes (fortunately it's a pretty good one) while he fights through security to bring a girl on stage to dance with.
When U2 first started, the leader singer (whose real name was Paul Hewson) originally went by the name "Bono Vox." Later he shortened it to "Bono" and the rest, as they say, is history.
