Last fall, once I moved to my new regime of syncing my iPod with my Macbook (instead of manually managing music as I had in the past), I decided to listen to every album I own at least once. Well, not every album I own, but every album that I would consider part of my personal “canon.” Not including live dead, that works out to about 8300 songs, 26 days of continuous listening. In short, a hell of a lot of music.
On Friday, I finished. Last song? Rival, from Pearl Jam’s 2000 album “Binaural.” Did I learn anything from this, other than that I have a huge music collection? Not much, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that most albums that I have purchased over the years I still enjoy as much as I did when I first got them. Some bands have aged better than others—in the early 90s I would have probably ranked Smashing Pumpkins over Alice In Chains, but AIC seem to have aged better—but maybe that’s just because they haven’t released an album since ’95, while Billy Corgan seems to only tarnish his legacy further with every release post-Mellan Collie, whether Smashing Pumpkins, solo, or even, God help us, “Zwan.”
Because I’ve been consumed by this project I haven’t really been listening to new music as much I should have. I now have a backlog of albums from last year that I need to give more attention to. Wilco, The National, Band of Horses, Rush, Ghostface Killah, Wu-Tang Clan, Robert Pollard, Mountain Goats, Drive By Truckers and many more have been neglected for far too long. Time to stop living in the past.

Radiohead release their seventh studio album today and it's only available online and you set your own price. Will you buy the album? Do you buy the idea?
I will buy the album, and I do buy the idea. Basically, Radiohead are pre-emptively leaking the album, and just seeing how much money they can get for it. I think they wil find that it's a substantial amount. As Ben and Mena Trott discovered in 2001, people are basicaly honest and, if they have the money, and see real value in something, they will pay for it.

I did a lot of music organizing this weekend, since my collection was in danger of spinning completely out of control as a result of all the CD ripping and re-ripping I've been doing (resulting from my getting my CDs out of storage a few weeks ago) and the huge mass of music I acquired from Greeness last weekend.

This morning I finally updated the production site with the new code that I've been working for the past month. As a result, the Trizzle Project now sports some new features, including:
Now that the site has been upgraded, I felt it was time to put some more compelling content on it. This evening I finally added more featured songs to Trizzle, after many months of their being absent. Since there was such a long hiatus, I added more than usual, fifteen in all, including new songs by the Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, the Kings of Leon, Of Montrel, Beirut and more.
Not only that, but every featured song has a high-quality un-DRMed mp3 so you can listen to the whole song (no 30 second samples on Trizzle!) and even add it to your media player of choice (but i f you do and you like the song enough to listen to it more than few times, please do buy a copy of the song from the ITMS or better yet the entire album.)

A few weeks ago on BART I had an epiphany about how song, album and artist metadata should be stored in the Trizale Project database (the "Trizzbase".) Since then I have been working on refactoring all of the Trizzle project code and database calls. Today while watching the Super Bowl I moved all of that code up to the Trizzle test site on fozboot.com.
Although the site doesn't look much different, major changes have occured under the hood. Previously only songs could be tagged, rated and reviewed; now albums and artists can be as well. Plus the new database structure will make it much easier to add other objects in the future like books, restaurants, concerts The revamped recent reviews page shows off the advantages of the new schema as it mixs reviews of songs, albums and artists. The ui design needs some work of course, but now that the engine is in better shape I'd like to start gussying up the interface.
I bought one of the most popular tracks from "More Fish" but was annoyed to learn that the first minute and a half was a pointless and chaotic New Year's Eve countdown skit. So, using QuickTime Pro I sliced the offending material off and now post the result for the enjoyment by the Vox community. The track itself is awesome–a very old school feel with a bass loop that recalls Low End Theory-era Tribe Called Quest.
How about this? Name your Guided By Voices desert island discs. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have five GBV albums to listen to, which ones would they be?
