In honor of 90s music Monday, here is one of my (if not my all-time) favorite videos, which I only discovered last year thanks to Vox--Yo La Tengo's clip for "Sugarcube." Even if you've never heard of Yo La Tengo or have no interest in their music, it's still worth watching. There are so many hilarious things in it it's hard to know where to begin.
- the quote which I used to title this post
- "if you want to learn how to write rock lyrics, you have to learn where the hobbits dwell."
- "Everyone remember the Foghat principle--fourth album should be double live."
- The teacher reading the lyrics to "Closer to the Heart" to rapt attention.
- YlT's hapless attempts to trash a hotel room, windmill a guitar and put cool decorations on their drums.
Matador Records just posted the first track from Yo La Tengo's forthcoming "I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass." On first listen, it's a crazy guitar freak-out somewhat reminiscent of "Spec Bebop" but with vocals. They also announced tourdates, including three nights at the Fillmore in October (19,20,21.)
No, that's not my sentiment of the day, but rather the title of the new Yo La Tengo album, according to James McNew as reported in this Pitchfork exclusive.
McNew didn't have much to say about the sound of the record, other than that the songs are "by our standards, short and upbeat." The disc was recorded in Nashville with longtime YLT producer Roger Moutenot, and features contributions from local Nashville horn players as well as string arrangements by David Mansfield.
They've been rather quiet lately, but this Pitchfork article has a good summary of what they've been up to. Biggest news is that the article claims they will have a new album out in September on Matador. They're also releasing an album of the WTF covers they do ever year for the WFMU fund-raiser marathon, called "Yo La Tengo is Murdering the Classics." Speaking of WTF, the article lists some tourdates, including one in Saratoga, CA at something called the "Montalvo Center for the Arts." Never heard of this place... why are YlT palying there? And why? I assume it must be some kind of special gig, like when a few years ago they played along live to a silent movie at the Academy of Arts.
